Filling Chief Irr’s shoes, a task in it of itself

City of Yuma is tasked with filling the spot of a local role model

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Irr name is synonymous with the word 'Duty". Chief Stephen Irr comes from a long line of people dedicated to public service.

For those who grew up in Yuma, the Irr name is a household name. And, although we wish Chief Irr a happy retirement, it's sad to see him go.

So, it's not surprising that the City of Yuma took a different approach to introduce the city's next fire chief. In fact, they introduced the two candidates being considered for the position.

On March 23, the city held a special open house on the terrace of the Yuma Civic Center. The public, along with local dignitaries and members of the fire service got to meet both men.

Christopher Riley is a Southern California native who fell in love with the fire service in college. He spent 25-years working for the fire service in Southern California.

For the past 15-years, Riley served as Fire Chief for departments in both Colorado Springs and Pueblo, Colorado. Riley's top priority is the safety of the men and women under his care, the community, and other first responders such as law enforcement.

Mike Noonan

Mike Noonan is also a native of the Golden State, having lived in Tehama County. He served in a variety of capacities at Cal Fire. He served Cal Fire for more than 32-years. He retired and then came out of retirement to serve.

The final decision on which candidate will take the reigns will come down to the City of Yuma's Administrator.
