Perry’s payback dashes Lady Raiders state title hopes

Another successful 20+ win season for Cibola ends with an all too familiar loss in state playoff opening round

YUMA, Ariz. ( KYMA, KECY-TV ) - The Cibola girls basketball team ended the regular season on February 4th, 2022, with a win on the road at Perry, 65-58. For the Lady Raiders, it was their 22nd win on the season and with the victory, an opening round home playoff game to start the AIA Class 6A state tournament.

While regular season success has been a staple under head coach Anthony Gerg, winning in the state playoffs has been an elusive chase. Despite all the success and 20 win seasons, the last time Cibola won a state playoff game came back in February, 2016.

On Wednesday night, #6 seed Cibola had the home court advantage but it was Perry who set the tone early with a full court press that the Lady Raiders had a hard time breaking. Cibola trailed by five at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Perry got their revenge on Cibola and defeated the Lady Raiders in their home gym, in front of their home fans 74-55. Perry as the #11 seed, is the lowest seed to advance into the state quarterfinals. They will face #3 seed Westwood on February 22, 2022.
