Deadline for TSA approved ID quickly approaching
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - The deadline to get the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) approved ID is next year. Transportation officials want to remind the community to get it done as soon as possible.
The actual deadline is on October 1, 2020. To get the ID, you're going to have to visit your local motor vehicles department to apply for it.
The application process can be started online to make the in-person application process faster.
To apply, a person needs to show a birth certificate, social security card, and two forms of documentation that proves the person is a resident of the state they are applying for.
Both Arizona and California are requiring their residents to get this new ID if they plan on using it to travel. The cost of the ID is $25.
The difference between the two is that the REAL ID will have a gold star on the top right corner to show it is TSA compliant.
The Real ID Act was passed after a recommendation from the 9/11 commission to strengthen airport security and prevent terrorist attacks.
