Somerton-Cocopah Fire responds to second canal crash

A busy day for Somerton Cocopah Fire – its crews dealt with two different crashes along the banks of the city’s canals.

Firefighters say they got a call about an accident at County 17th and Somerton Avenue just after 3:30 Friday afternoon. They arrived to find a Ford minivan lodged on a cement canal abutment, and a Buick sedan in the center of the road.

They say the driver of the van told them the Buick ran a stop sign and hit his vehicle. He told them the impact of the crash pushed the van up the canal bank and onto the abutment.

An elderly woman and four children were riding in the van at the time of the crash. Paramedics took the older woman to the hospital. Neither the driver nor the kids needed medical attention. The driver of the Buick wasn’t hurt either.

Earlier in the day a similar crash along County 15th and Avenue D killed one person. Witnesses say that accident was also caused by a vehicle running a stop sign. It also sent one car careening dangerously close to a canal.
