Memorial services for Msgr. Richard O’Keeffe

Monsignor Richard O’Keeffe was laid to rest Monday with two services and burial.

The late Monsignor was described as a man of integrity and character by those who knew him. He was also known to be a lover of sports.

Hundreds of people filled the pews of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for the first of two services.

They could be seen with rosaries in hand as The Hail Mary prayer was recited.

Those who knew him best, like Father Manuel Carranza, said they will deeply miss his heart.

“His character, his love, his determination, and his way of helping out those who needed it the most,” said Father Carranza.

The services did not end Monday morning. There was a second mass at 2 p.m., followed by a burial.

The burial began with a long line of cars arriving at the Desert Lawn Memorial Park.

The pallbearers, two being Adolfo Ramos and Chris Magdalena, greeted the Hearst at its arrival.

Adolfo and Ramos called it an honor.

O’Keeffe arrived in Yuma in 1972 as Associate Priest of the Catholic Church. He was a dominant figure in the world of Yuma’s politics, especially advocating for the needs of the poor.

“He tried to help those who were affected most in the community like the farm workers and the migrants, no matter who it was he always tried to help in any way that he can. It was truly admirable,” said Father Carranza.
