United Yuma Firefighters Association host 2nd Annual “Fire Muster”

The United Yuma Firefighter Association held their 2nd annual Fire Muster Saturday.

The “Fire Muster” is an event where 10 teams comprised of a mix of firefighters, first responders, and nurses competing in a series of task and exercises that connects competitors to the roots of firefighting.

David Padilla, Membership Services Director for UYFA said, “So everything from a hose cart where we use to have to pull our own hose on a cart to the fire before operational vehicles and trucks. And then also we have an event like a bucket brigade. You simulate putting over a fire using buckets. ”

The event started at 9 A.M. and lasted till 4 P.M.

Padilla said it allowed the public to see a different side of first responders.
“The community gets to see us in a different light. For most people, they interact with the fire department when it’s their worst day. When they have to call 911 for something. And this is a great opportunity for them to come out, meet us, check out what we do. In a less stressful environment,” said Padilla.

Padilla said the “Fire Muster”, raised funds for firefighters who had given so much for the community.

Padilla added, “We use that money to help take care of them and their families. If they’re ever diagnosed with cancer, they have some injury or some illness on the job. That’s what that money goes to.”

Yuma firefighter, Justin Zahn who competed in the “Fire Muster” said the event builds camaraderie with fellow first responders.
“To be able to come outside of work and just to have a good time with the guys that you know you’re used to spending 24 hours with running calls. And doing all that to come out here and kinda cut loose is always fun,” said Zahn.

Deputy Rene Garcia, of the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office, was enjoying the event with his family and said it’s important to support other local agencies.

“We’re all out here for the same cause. You know help out our community and support each other. You know it’s just a big family that we have in Yuma.”
