Calexico police arrest attempted burglary suspect

Calexico Police Department arrested a suspect who attempted to break into an occupied residence just a block away from the Calexico Police station.

The suspect was arrested on April 30, a week after he allegedly tried breaking into a home on the 500 block of Heffernan Avenue.

Johanne Magallanes was in the back room of her home with her husband when they heard a loud noise.

Footage from her security camera shows the suspect knocking on the door and looking through windows.

The suspect then attempts to break down the door.

“My husband heard the the noise and saw a shadow by the door, when he looked to see who it was, the guy left running,” said Magallanes.

Calexico police say the video footage from the homes security camera helped them identify the suspect. They were able to put a hold on him at the Calexico port of entry.

The suspect crossed the border Tuesday and was detained by border patrol.

“Honestly I don’t feel safe, I’ve gathered with my neighbors to talk about what we can do to keep our area safe,” said Magallanes.

Magallanes says there are often homeless and strangers roaming around in her area, but nothing like this has ever happened.

She thanks the Calexico Police Department for being proactive and says it gives her comfort to know the suspect was arrested.

The suspect was on probation for auto theft and has now been charged with attempted residential burglary.
