Yuma Road Report, Week of April 25

Here is a list of the upcoming projects and road construction that will be affecting the busy streets of Yuma.

City Projects

1st Avenue, 16th Street to Orange

1st Avenue is closed in all directions between 13th Street and 16th Street in the first phase of improvements to 1st Avenue between 16th Street and Orange Avenue. The project will include improvements to underground water and sewer infrastructure, upgrading sidewalks and some adjacent driveways, and improving surface pavement. Improvements in the intersection with 16th Street will include lane restrictions on 16th Street between May and September.

The overall project time is expected to take eight months to complete, likely through the end of autumn.

8th Street, Avenue C to Avenue D

In cooperation with Yuma County, the City is reconstructing and widening 8th Street between Avenue B and Avenue C. The work includes widening the roadway to a 5-lane section with sidewalks, streetlights and drainage improvements. The contractor will be starting work in the next few weeks and completion is anticipated by early November. The roadway will be closed to through traffic, but access will be maintained to local homes and businesses. Questions about this project should be directed to Yuma County.

Avenue 9E, 24th Street to North Frontage

The City is constructing bicycle lanes along Avenue 9E from the North Frontage Road to 24th Street. In addition, the bridge over the A canal will be resurfaced. Work is anticipated to begin in early May with the bulk of construction taking 2 months to complete. Motorists should expect to see shoulder closures and intermittent lane closures throughout the duration of construction.

Virginia Drive at 28th Street

The City is constructing a new stormwater retention basin at the northeast corner of Virginia Drive and 28th Street. Travelers in this area should expect shoulder closures along the east side of Virginia Drive and north side of 28th Street. A portion of the sidewalk is also closed for replacement. Work is anticipated to be completed within by early May.

City Street Maintenance

Street maintenance operations for the week of April 29 through May 3 are as follows:

Fog seal operations:

-Ocotillo subdivisions 5 and 6

-Orange Grove subdivision

-Avenue 8E from 40th Street to 42nd Lane

-24th Street from 23rd Lane to Avenue 3E (individual sections)

Traffic lane striping throughout the city
City of Yuma Public Works is refreshing traffic lane stripes citywide for the next two months. Crews will get started at 4 a.m. weekdays. Please be aware of cones around newly painted lines and avoid hitting them.

Other utility projects and encroachment permits

4th Avenue, Catalina Drive – 28th Street

Century Link will be doing night work along 4th Avenue starting April 5. While work is underway to install new fiber, traffic control will be in place between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. on 4th Avenue from Catalina Drive to 28th Street. This will include, but is not limited to, reduced lanes, sidewalk closures, slowed speed limits and more. All roadways will be fully opened during the day. The project will be complete on June 6.

Avenue A at intersections of West 32nd Street (Century Link)

Century Link crews will be working in two locations off Avenue A. During the 60-day project, starting March 21, crews will be gaining access to the manholes along Avenue A at 32nd Street. Drivers can expect the right lane to be closed at the intersection of Avenue A and 32nd Street. The work should be complete by the end of May.

14th Street and 4th Avenue (TrueNet)

May 6-13, lane restrictions will take place on 4th Avenue at 14th Street for installation of telecommunications fiber. The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph.

Avenue 3E at I-8 (TrueNet)

May 6-13, lane restrictions will take place on Avenue 3E between Gila Ridge Road and 24th Street for installation of telecommunications fiber.

Avenue 3E and 32nd Street (SW Gas)

Avenue 3E will experience lane restrictions north of 32nd Street for Southwest Gas valve maintenance. The permit expires May 3.

Avenue 9E, 24th Street to North Frontage

Avenue 9E will have narrowed lanes and reduced speed limit between 24th Street and North Frontage Road for bike lane designation, signage installation, and lane striping. The two-month project is expected to be complete in mid-July.

Avenue 7E south of 24th Street (SW Gas)

Avenue 7E and intersecting side streets south of 24th Street will be affected by Southwest Gas work on 786 feet of the main pipe. Narrow lanes and traffic control devices will be in place on the Avenue and along 24th Place, 24th Lane, 25th Street, 25th Place, and 26th Street. Work is estimated to be complete by mid-June.

Avenue B and 12th Street (TrueNet)

May 6-13, Avenue B shoulder work will take place north of 12th Street for telecommunications fiber installation. Use caution in the area.

Gila Street, 2nd to 3rd streets (SW Gas)

For one 3-day period prior to June 28, Gila Street will be closed between 2nd Street and 3rd Street for Southwest Gas service replacement.

1st Street and Avenue B (Century Link)

Century Link is working at the corner of 1st Street and Avenue B, requiring lane closures along 1st Street near that intersection. The 60-day project should be complete by early May.

3rd Street, 4th Avenue – Avenue A (Century Link)

Century Link crews are starting a five-month project to repair telephone cable along 3rd Street, between 4th Avenue and Avenue A. The project which will involve accessing manholes will cause lane closures and in some areas sidewalk closures.

U.S. Highway 95 (ADOT)

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) advises drivers to plan ahead for several months of lane restrictions on U.S. Highway 95 in Yuma. Contractors are scheduled to improve the intersection of U.S. 95 and Avenue 8E with an installation of a traffic signal, concrete pedestrian ramps, and repaving. The following restrictions will be in place 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays:

-U.S. 95 will be narrowed to one lane open in each direction from Avenue 7E to Avenue 8E.

-U.S. 95’s speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph.

-Avenue 8E’s speed limit will be reduced to 40 mph.

-An 11-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place.

Local traffic may use 24th Street as an alternate route, to take Araby Road through to Avenue 9E during the work hours.

Interstate 8 from Yuma to milepost 134 (ADOT)

ADOT and the Federal Highway Administration are repairing the pavement along Interstate 8 between Yuma and Maricopa counties. The project consists of applying a fog seal and re-striping I-8 in three areas: I-8 from milepost 0.56 to 20; mileposts 66 to 72; mileposts 115 to 134. The project is scheduled to begin this spring with completion anticipated in summer 2019.

The following west- and eastbound I-8 off- and on-ramps will close intermittently.

Foothills Boulevard

A 12-foot vehicle-width restriction will be in place. Alternate routes include using the preceding I-8 on-ramp or exit in the work zone. Motorists should allow extra travel time and plan for possible delays while work is underway.
