YCSO not taking part in 287(g) program

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office said they will not be taking part in the 287(g) program which allows Immigration and Customs Enforcement to get a handle of illegal immigrants.

The program allows local authorities to assist the federal government with the releasing of migrants in the community.

YCSO’s Captain Joseph Lackie said the agency will not take part in the program because it doesn’t fulfill their mission for Yuma County. However, Capt. Lackie added they do not see a need to enter the program.

“We just do not see an increase of illegal immigrants coming through our local jail that are charged with crimes,” said Capt. Lackie.
