Man suspected of drunk driving arrested after hit-and-run

A Calexico man was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after he collided with another vehicle and fled the scene on Willoughby Road in Calexico Monday afternoon.

According to California Highway Patrol (CHP), at about 4:36 p.m., Calexico resident Francisco Carrizosa was heading eastbound on Willoughby west of Dogwood Road in his silver Nissan Versa. The second driver, Maria Scott, was driving a black GMC Terrain and traveling northbound at the same time.

CHP officials said Carrizosa failed to stop for a posted stop sign and the front of his Versa hit the right side of Scott’s Terrain. The collision caused the Terrain to leave the roadway where it came to rest on its wheels on the east shoulder of Dogwood Road. The Versa came to rest on its wheels before fleeing the scene.

Emergency personnel arrived on scene to treat Maria Scott who was then transported to El Centro Regional Medical Center for injuries to the left side of her body and a possibly broken hand.

According to authorities, Carrizosa fled the scene traveling eastbound on Willoughby Road trying to make his way home in Calexico. A witness contacted authorities and reported the license plates on Carrizosa’s Versa. Calexico Police Department located Carrizosa and his vehicle as he entered the city limits.

Carrizosa was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and was arrested for felony DUI, felony hit and run and driving while suspended for previous offenses, CHP said.

Carrizosa was also transported to ECRMC for a laceration to his head.

The crash remains under investigation.
