San Luis PD: Dozen cases of marijuana vaping among teens

Parents should be on the lookout for signs of marijuana vaping with their teens, according to San Luis Police Department.

This comes after the department reported over a dozen cases of young teens allegedly found with vape pens in San Luis. They were filled with THC, according to police.

The sale of marijuana and vaporizers is prohibited for those under the age in 18 in Arizona.

” They have that THC, that actual substance that is being used and again, which makes it more potent as far as the high, ” Lt. Marco Santana, San Luis Police Department, said.

Of those cases, some were reported on school grounds. The others happened around the city of San Luis, according to Lt. Santana.

News 11 reached out to Yuma Union High School District for comment. They said they can’t give details on these incidents per FERPA law, but if ” anything like that on one of our campuses would be a Class 1 violation with a multiple-day suspension, ” according to Eric Patten, YUHSD Communications Director.

Lt. Santana said these young teens’ cases are being handed over to the Yuma County Juvenile Court.

“Obviously, we have several cases that we have sent over to the Juvenile Court, and we’re waiting prosecution,” Lt. Santana added.

This warning comes after an uptick in fentanyl-related overdoses and deaths in our area.

“It’s not just our community in San Luis, we’re seeing it in the entire state, as well as the U.S., you know the opiate issue is among us and it’s one of the things we’re trying to do on our side, and our community here in San Luis to make sure we attack it head-on,” said Lt. Santana.

That’s why they’re warning parents. The police department can’t do it alone and is asking parents to vigilant of their child’s behavior.

” Communication is very important. Right now, we’re living in different times, there’s social media involved, so the communication needs to be very, very strong between parents and their kids themselves, ” he added.
