CBP officers arrest two for allegedly smuggling hard drugs

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a man and women on Wednesday for allegedly attempting to smuggle 58 pounds of methamphetamine and heroin in separate occasions through the Port of San Luis.

Customs and Border Protection said the 39-year-old man, of San Luis, Sonora, was referred for additional inspection of his Chevy Sedan as he tried to enter the United States early Wednesday morning. A CBP narcotics detection canine alerted the scent coming from within the front bumper. This led officers to discover multiple packages of narcotics.

The drugs were identified as nearly 55 pounds of meth that were estimated to be valued at $164,000 and almost three pounds of heroin valued at more than $74,000.

Later that morning, officers at the pedestrian lane referred a 27-year-old Phoenix woman for further inspection as she attempted to enter the U.S. After a canine alerted officers, a search led them to locate a single package of meth, valued at more than $3,000.

Officers seized the drugs, the vehicle, and arrested the individuals. Both were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
