Yuma armed forces park replaces falling plaques

The Yuma Armed Forces Park is honoring the men and women who served their country with an engraved plaque, however , those plaques have been falling apart at the seams.

The park is one of its kind in the state of Arizona because it is designed to honor all military veterans, those currently serving, and those who gave up their lives on duty, no matter what branch of service.

The city of Yuma received funds from the Quechan tribe’s gaming revenue to replace some of the plaques that have fallen off.

At first, city officials thought it was vandalism, however , they later found that it was an issue with the type of glue they were using to prop the plaques up. The issue was more evident in the winter time when temperatures were cold enough to cause the adhesive on the back to detach.

Under state compacts, the tribe contributes a percentage of their gaming revenues each year to the City, which then allocates those proceeds to area agencies, non-profits and efforts.

Checks were handed out to three other non-profit organizations as well, including Crossroads Mission, the Food Bank, and Assistance League of Yuma.

The plaques are expected to be completed by next month, which repairs being done as needed.
