Homeless man arrested for having drugs for sale

Calexico Police arrested 29-year-old Carlos Rodriguez. He’s charged with having drugs for sale.

Det. Armando Orozco said, “One of the investigators was driving his unmarked unit, and came across a subject that he knows is a local transient, and was in a vehicle. He suspected that something was going on.”

Police pulled over at Lincoln and Harold streets on Wednesday around 10 a.m. after Rodriguez made a traffic infraction. When questioned, police found he didn’t have a driver’s license.

“While speaking with him, officers found a marijuana pill bottle on the floor board of the vehicle and they could see marijuana buds in the center console of the vehicle. There was a strong odor of marijuana being emitted from the vehicle. Located a baggie of prescription medication. Subject admitted that he didn’t have a prescription for it. And a duffel bag with the marijuana,” Orozco said.

Police found over six pounds of marijuana they suspected was for sale.

“Due to the way it was packaged, the fact that there was a scale in the vehicle and other evidence there led us to believe that it was for sale,” Orozco said.

Officer Ismael Granados said being familiar with the area is crucial in solving crime.

“Having prior knowledge of local delinquents and people that constantly commit crimes is very beneficial for the officers to know their background and to have a lot of knowledge on that person,” Granados said.

Rodriguez is known to police for prior convictions.

“The more knowledge we have on someone the better it is for us to solve crime and us to investigate certain matters within the community to make the community a better place,” Granados said.

Police said Rodriguez was in serious trouble with the law again.

“The subject is being charged with possession of marijuana for sale, transportation of that marijuana. Possession of a controlled substance for sale, and the transportation of that substance,” Orozco said.

If convicted, Rodriguez is facing six to eight years in prison.
