10 inmates injured, 50 involved in prison riot

Ten inmates are injured after a riot broke out Friday morning in several areas at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The department said approximately 50 inmates were involved in the riot that happened in the Facility A yard.

Correctional officers immediately responded at around 9:06 a.m. and gave multiple orders to stop the fighting.

When inmates did not comply, officers used pepper spray to disperse the incidents.

The department said only non-lethal force was used and multiple inmate-manufactured weapons were recovered at the scene.

Ten inmates were injured and transferred to area hospitals.

One of the injured inmates suffered serious head injuries and was transported to an area hospital by emergency life flight.

No officers were seriously injured and some correctional staff members were exposed to pepper spray then later treated at the prison.

The department said inmate movement on Facility A has been limited due to the investigation being conducted.

The incident is being investigated by the Investigative Services Unit at the prison.
