Report: FBI criticized for retaining text messages

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is being urged to update and formalize its policies on collecting and retaining text messages.

A report published by the Justice Department’s Inspector General on Tuesday, calls on the FBI to do more research and testing before choosing a new tool to collect and retain texts.

The report also advises the FBI to work with the tool’s vendor to ensure that such data is saved to a secure encrypted site.

This comes amid the criticism of the FBI’s current technology to retain texts.

One glitch led to a temporary gap in messages collected from agency-issued devices by two former top officials involved in the Russia probe.
