Members of the second migrant caravan arrives in San Luis shelter
More than three-hundred migrant families wait in line at the San Luis port of entry.
Just a block away from the port of entry lies a shelter, Don Chon, that is currently housing 32 migrants from the second caravan that left Central America January 15th.
One of the shelters in San Luis, Mexico called Don Chon that is currently housing 32 migrant families from the caravan. Among those is Yaracely Gonzalez, who is desperately seeking asylum into the U.S. to help fight for her husband’s life.
“My husband crossed 9-months ago and we didn’t think he would get this sick, the doctors said there is no hope of survival without a kidney transplant,” said Gonzalez.
Since arriving in San Luis the line to seek asylum has doubled, now with 300 families.
“The process is slow, there are days where they call 2 to 3 families and then they spend 3 to 4 days without calling anyone, those people begin to come to us for aid, for food, for clothing and we don’t have the sufficient amount of resources,” said Ascension Serna, Director of Don Chon.
Although the process times are slow, for Yaracely there is no turning back.
“No, because I don’t have the money and I don’t want to risk my life and the lives of children, I rather do it right and hopefully I get there faster,” said Gonzalez.
Of the 300 families waiting to seek asylum at the San Luis port of entry, about 38 are from Mexico. The director of the shelter said they are expecting more migrants to arrive in the next few days.
