Arizona, California in top ranking for states with most STDs

A new report from Alarms.org breaks down where states are seeing the biggest increase amongst several sexually transmitted diseases.

according to data pulled from The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise in the United States.

Chlamydia saw a 22 percent increase from 2014 to 2017, gonorrhea rose 67 percent, and syphilis increased 76 percent, according to the data.

Alarms.org pulled data from the 2017 STD Surveillance Report from the CDC to conduct the study.

The website looked at four commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted diseases:

chlamydia syphilis gonorrhea secondary syphilis. This is how Arizona and California ranked on those four lists.

State chlamydia rate per 100,000 people:

Arizona ranked 12th on the list, with 39,598 cases.

California followed close behind at number 14, with 218,785 cases with a rate of 557.4 per 100K.

State gonorrhea rate per 100,000 people:

California ranked 13th on the list for gonorrhea. Arizona followed behind ranking in at number 19.

State syphilis rate per 100,000 people:

Syphilis is a deadly bacterial infection the CDC closely follows in the United States.

California has the third largest amount of syphilis cases in the nation, while Arizona ranked at number five.

Overall, California ranked fourth on the list with high STD rates.

The CDC is fighting an uphill battle trying to get STD rates back down to levels seen in the early 2000s.
