Additional officers on patrol for holiday weekends

The Yuma Police Department will have additional officers on patrol for Christmas and New Year’s weekend to ensure that anyone driving impaired will be caught.

The DUI enforcement period will run from Dec. 21-23 and Dec. 28-31.

The goal is to seek out any impaired drivers but the police department hopes to see more people designating a driver or using an alternative way to get home.

“You know we are all about celebrating, but do it responsibly. Get an Uber, get a taxi, designate a driver, know your limit,” said Sgt. Lori Franklin with the Yuma Police Department. “We want you to get home safe but we want you to have fun also.”

The last DUI detail during Thanksgiving was a success, Sgt. Franklin said. YPD saw more designated drivers and sober drivers on the roadways.

She said she hopes that trend continues this holiday season.
