National Honking of Horns honors veterans

A local veteran chapter is participating in a nationwide effort to honor veterans Sunday.

The National Honking of the Horns will take place this morning at 11 A.M.

Hundreds of veterans will gather to honk their horns with others to raise awareness of the veterans who served in WWI and to the end of the war and to honor all veterans.

A buffet will follow the event. Hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad and chips for a $6 donation.

The event is organized by the American Veterans/KWVA #330.

The American Veterans with KWVA post 330 is a non-profit veteran’s service organization.

This group has helped thousands of veterans that come through their doors.

The post runs a full bar and restaurant operated solely by volunteers.

June Condon is with the KWVA says that unlike legion groups around Yuma in which you needed to be in during the time of war, the KWVA has members that are still involved in Korea today.

She believes that helping veterans in any way possible is crucial for those who gave some and those who gave all.

Condon told me a little more about the history of the national honking of horns day and why it is important to continue these traditions on veterans day.

“It’s a national holiday or an event that everybody is doing around the country and it was designed for the end of world war I 100 years ago and so it was just a symbolic thing to do. It doesn’t matter whether you are with a group or by yourself you can just honk the horn and say thank you to all of our veterans who served. Our veterans are the ones who save our country and they have done so much for us and when they went to war or whatever they did. They didn’t say I can’t do it today or not today the veterans but their life on the line for our freedom.

The post is open 7 days a week from 7 am to 9 pm and they put on yard sales every Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. down the street from the post

If you would like to participate, the KWVA is located on 8889 S. Frontage Road. post
