Reaction to “Pay Plan” for YPD
This past Wednesday night the Yuma city council discussed a pay plan that would offer a three percent raise for all city employees. The goal is to help maintain and retain YPD officers. However, due to the low pay grade, the Yuma Police Departments ability to keep employees has been dwindling. Sergeant Eric Egan, The President of the Fraternal Order of Police in Yuma believes this raise shows very little concern for those in Lieutenant positions or higher.
“There have been plenty of conversations with the Mayor and city council about coming up with an adoption in one of the proposed pay plans from the Yuma Police Department. We went in there the other night and left completely disappointed and felt that city council let us down. The folks that have been working here for a very long time, committed their life and was dedicated to the city, were told the other night that their not anywhere near as important as they should be and their not going to be apart of this pay plan that was proposed,” said Sgt, Eric Egan, The President of the Fraternal Order of Police, Yuma Lodge 24
When comparing salaries, a Police Captain or Lieutenant in Yuma County makes the lowest amount of money compared to their counterparts in other counties across Arizona. This proposed “pay plan” is supposed to go into effect in January of next year with an already promised two and a half percent increase to start out.
