Suspect dies, DPS troopers hurt in Phoenix freeway shooting
UPDATE:
Following a chase and shooting that left a suspect dead and three state troopers injured late Monday, part of Interstate 17 in Phoenix remained closed as the metro area’s morning commute began Tuesday.
Officials have no estimate when I-17 between the interchange with Interstate 10 near Sky Harbor International Airport and I-17 exits south of downtown Phoenix will reopen.
According to Phoenix police, the suspect opened fire and troopers and Mesa police returned fire, riddling the truck with bullet holes as traffic went by on the other side of a median.
The suspect was killed and the troopers were released from hospitals after being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
No identities were released.

Live television video showed a suspect in a white truck being pursued before a DPS trooper in a patrol SUV performed a PIT maneuver about 5 p.m. Monday.
That’s when the suspect started shooting and law enforcement returned fire.
DPS says Mesa police were involved in the shooting and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
His name hasn’t been released.
Phoenix police say three DPS troopers suffered non-life threatening injuries and two of them were transported to a hospital for treatment.
