Pioneer Memorial Hospital hosts students wellness fair at IVC

Free vaccines and flu shots were some of the many services that Pioneers Memorial Hospital and local health agencies provided students at Imperial Valley College’s Student Health and Wellness Fair.

More than 30 local health agencies offered Imperial Valley College (IVC) students tips on how to live a healthier life and other services available to them in the valley.

With a high pace lifestyle, one college student said it is hard to stay healthy. IVC Student Services Specialist, Miriam Trejo said, “A lot of time students just grab and go when they can. So we’re trying to show little ways to alternate that. And just give them the opportunity to live the healthier lifestyle so they can just prolong their life.”

The fair also helped students who do not have transportation to visit the health agencies. Taylor Lyster, a student attending IVC, said, “A lot of students don’t have the means to travel. And I think about 60 percent of our students do take public transportation. That doesn’t really offer the chance for you to go actually to the agency to get stuff done that you could possibly need.”

For these organizations, it’s important to reach out to students and let them know the resources they can take advantage of. Pioneers Memorial Hospital Public Affairs Liaison, Karina Lopez said, “For us to be able to come to them on their own home turf and having them just come as they can and time that they have it’s really important for us to kind of be here for them.”
