Witnesses react to tunnel discovery in San Luis

Witnesses of the active investigation that led to a tunnel discovery at a vacant building in San Luis, Ariz. weigh in on its discovery.

“Well, I saw the whole building secure like with Border Patrol and cops and there was like a canine in the back. I mean, I really didn’t know what was going on at the time. Then, when I crossed the border here to [Mexico], on the other side, I saw like a bunch of like military guys, like the Mexican soldiers as well on the other side on the same directional line from where this building is at,” described Casey Butron.

The tunnel was confirmed on Wednesday by Customs and Border Protection officials.

Some who work nearby the investigation said they were not surprised by the discovery.

“To me, it seems kind of shocking because we don’t know how long that they’ve been making that investigation for or how long they’ve been working on that and that investigation has been for quite a while now,” said David Navarro.

Others said the discovery is scary.

“A lot of things go through my head but I think I feel a bit [insecure] right now, a bit scared because they don’t let us actually walk by there or close by there. We usually take a different trail,” said Jorge Choza.

Homeland Security Investigations told News 11 this would be an active investigation for a few days on Tuesday.

The last tunnel discovered in San Luis, Ariz. was in 2012.
