Sentencing rescheduled for man charged with armed bank robbery

The man charged with robbing the National Bank of Arizona last December was in court Wednesday for his sentencing.

29-year-old Richard Weigelt’s mother and father were in court as well as a family friend who said he has known Weigelt since he was young.

The friend said he feels that Weigelt is remorseful and he understands what he did.

The friend also said that Weigelt only deserved a sentence of mandatory rehabilitation instead of the one and a half year sentencing requested by the state.

Back in December of 2017, Weigelt handed the bank teller a note saying that he had a weapon and demanded money. The teller then gave Weigelt an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police arrested Weigelt six hours later.

At the time, Weigelt had also been facing two probation terms with the m unicipal court for a shoplifting offense.

He was formally charged with robbery, possession of heroin, and drug paraphernalia.

The bond for the robbery case was set at $50,000 and $5,000 for the second case of drug allegations.

In June, Weigelt pleaded guilty to one felony count of armed robbery.

Weigelt’s sentencing has been pushed back to August 15 at 8:30 a.m.
