Missing hiker found dead at Kofa Wildlife Refuge

The hiker that was reported missing July 30th was found dead at the Kofa Wildlife Refuge Tuesday morning, according to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies spoke to the reporting party who said 28-year-old Nathan Hughes was missing and had last called her on Friday, July 27th. Hughes, a Mississippi resident, gave the reporting party his GPS location and said he was going camping and hiking in the Kofa Wildlife Refuge. He also told the reporting party that if he did not contact them by Sunday night, they should inform law enforcement.

With the help of the Border Patrol and MCAS Yuma Search, YCSO conducted a search and found Hughes’ vehicle about six miles east of Highway 95.

At around 9:55 a.m., Hughes was found dead approximately one mile from his vehicle. Authorities said no foul play is suspected.

Next of kin has been notified.
