Calexico city officials propose new water rates to residents tonight

Resident in Calexico are currently spending a flat rate of just over a hundred dollars a month on their water bill. But the new proposed rate would have residents pay for what they use instead. One city official says this will save residents money.

“25% of our residents will see a reduce rate. And that basically what you’re looking at is evening things out now. And so we feel that it is fair. And it’s fair according to a very good study that was conducted.”

Any profit from the rate changes goes directly to upgrading the city’s water facilities. Miguel Figueroa, Housing and Economic Development Director said, “Any revenue that is generated, through what the rate payers pay on a monthly basis for water and sewer, goes specifically to improvements of the infrastructure of the water and waste water facilities.”

One local resident urges others to protest the city’s proposal. Joong Kim, Calexico resident said, “They have to contest it. They have to fight. Don’t let the city council make a fool out of you guys. The city has money.”

The meeting tonight begins at 6:30 PM.
