Motor Vehicle Division creates new online option for permit test

How many times have you visited your local Motor Vehicle Department office hoping to be in and out just to take a learners’ permit test?

The Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) has created a way to not only decrease wait times but also attempt to increase the passing rate for permit tests.

In early March, the MVD created the online learners’ permit test allowing customers to skip their visit to their local MVD office.

In order to deter users from cheating during the test, parents are required to make an account at the beginning of the test, administer the test, and remain in the room while their child is taking it.

In addition, the test is timed at 30 minutes. If the user is not able to take the test under 30 minutes, the program automatically locks them out.

As opposed to having to return to the office the next day to take the test again after failing it, the online version allows the person to take it again within the same day.

Connie Shaw, office manager of the MVD, said, “We’ve seen a lot more people passing the test the first time versus in the office not passing the test the first time because we do have a lot of failures when they do come into the office.”
