Pizza sparks interest in local roadways

Domino’s Pizza announced that they will be footing the bill to repair roads around the United States and they are asking for the public to request their city be next.

News 11 looked into whether the City of Yuma needed to repair the roadways. They came to the conclusion that some work could be done to our roads.

In fact, the City of Yuma hired a third party to survey the condition of the roads.

“When we had the study done it identified every piece of segment of asphalt within our community and gave it a specific rating whether it be good, fair, poor, marginal, very poor,” said Joel Olea, Director of Public Works.

There are 40 miles that need work, according to Olea.

One of those is 1st Avenue, specifically from Giss Parkway to 8th street.

“The crews have to visit that area at least twice a month to keep the potholes filled,” said Olea.

Even without the help of Domino’s Pizza, they expect to start work on that road in the fall.

However, that’s just one of the roadways that needs work. The City of Yuma is short on the funds they need.

“We need to have funding associated with about $8 million dollars per year to address the roadways. Right now our current level of funding is at about $3.7 million to address those specific roads,” said Olea.

The City of Yuma said they would need about $13 million to improve the entire roadway network. They also urge residents to contact them at (928)373-4500 with any roadway issues.
