Crossroads Mission offers two cooling centers for the public

Crossroads Mission has been serving the Desert Southwest for more than six decades

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - The Desert Southwest is known for a variety of things including its agriculture, history, military, and last but certainly not least, its heat and temperatures for the month of June are breaking record levels.

People looking to escape the heat can enter either two CrossRoad Mission locations and receive cold water at no cost and a place to sit and cool off.

The Crossroads Mission's main location is 944 S. Arizona Avenue and serves as one of its cooling centers. The mission's thrift store on 4th Avenue & 5th Avenue is another location locals can go to.

The non-profit also provides detox services for those looking to dissolve their addictions. And, when the mercury rises the mission provides the public with safe havens from the desert heat.

So, whether you're a lifer, a winter citizen, or new to the area, the heat is nothing to be taken lightly. According to the Centers for Disease Control, each year more than 600 people die as a result of heat-related illnesses.

With Monsoon Season just starting, the possibility of power outages is more likely. So, Cesar Acosta the mission's treatment director says residents are more than welcome to come into the cooling centers.

For decades (six to be exact) the Crossroads Mission has provided support to the residents of Yuma County. Whether it's providing shelter for the transient population, as well as families in need.
