Breaking News: 5.3 earthquake rocks Calipat

Series of earthquakes precede, follow afterward

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - A 5.3 magnitude earthquake hit Calipatria at about 10:55 Saturday morning. Its shocks could be felt throughout the Imperial Valley.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), it occurred 11km W of the town, at 33.143°N 115.632°W.

Viewing the USGS's data, this earthquake is the largest of a series of tremors which began rocking the Valley around 5:20 in the morning. Around that time, a 2.7 earthquake led the series, leading up to the magnitudinal 5.3 rating.

The USGS rated the severity as "violent/heavy" under their Community Internet Intensity Map, just under the "extreme/very heavy" rating. Aftershocks continue to rock the Valley.
