Gov. Ducey orders flags to half-staff for fallen AZ officer

PHOENIX, Ariz. (KYMA) - Arizona Governor Doug Ducey ordered flags to half-staff on Tuesday, after a Phoenix police officer was killed following an overnight car accident Monday.

According to witnesses, a driver ran a red light while officer Ginarro New was driving through the intersection on a green light. The driver of the other vehicle involved died at the scene.

Officer New was extricated from his squad car and taken to a hospital where he later died. the 27-year-old was a three-year veteran on the force and had just started his shift at the time of the crash.

New leaves behind a wife and extended family.

No word on the name of the other driver killed in the crash. Investigators believe speed may have been a factor.
