Police: Shots fired into the air in Somerton

Gun fire erupted on the streets of Somerton around 5:30 Thursday night.

There was a heavy police presence on South Cesar Chavez after a woman reported a blue or black lifted truck cut her off, then fired three shots into the air. Officers have recovered three shell casings from a 9mm handgun. When News 11 asked if this was a case of road rage, the Chief of Police said, “We do not have enough information at this time to make that assumption.” Authorities still do not think there was an intended target, just gunfire in the air. Somerton Police received a handful of calls, reporting the incident.

No injuries or property damage has been reported.

Firing a weapon into the air is illegal and the suspect is looking at charges of reckless discharge.
