Fire spreads to 200 acres, smoke seen across Yuma County

UPDATE (TUESDAY, 12:30 P.M. ): The brush fire we reported on last night has now spread to 200 acres according to the Wellton-Mohawk Irrigation and Drainage District.

They responded to the blaze along with Wellton Fire, Tacna Volunteer Fire, and YCSO.

It is burning in the Gila River bottom area. The fire is 60 percent contained and no buildings have been damaged.

There were no injuries reported and s moke is spreading to the Foothills area.

Rural Metro Fire advises residents to try and stay indoors and keep windows closed, especially if you have respiratory problems.

We will have a reporter at the scene with new information as it becomes available.

UPDATE (9:53 P.M.)

The fire began around 6 p.m. when Wellton Fire Department was called to assist Tacna Fire Department after reports of a brush fire.

After arriving at the scene located at Avenue 35E and County 8th Street, authorities discovered that the riverbed was on fire between the agriculture field and the desert.

As of about an hour ago, 20 acres have been burnt.

According to Wellton Fire Department, the fire has not been contained yet as both Wellton and Tacna Fire Departments continue to control the fire.

T he Wellton Mohawk Irrigation Drainage District are also working to contain the fire.

We are receiving reports of a brush fire near East County 8th Street in Wellton Monday evening.

Residents of the area contacted us stating that the brush fire is visible.

According to a Wellton firefighter, no injuries and no evacuations have been made.

A reporter is heading to the scene and we will keep you updated with any information as it becomes available.
