New traffic signals installed at County 19th Street

Residents living along Avenue B and County 19th St. in Yuma County are hoping a new traffic signal will make their neighborhood safer.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is installing a new traffic light at that intersection this month.

Hundreds of people travel on Avenue B heading to San Luis or coming into Yuma.

Alfonso Zavala from the Yuma County Sheriffs Office said that in 2017 there were eight accidents at that intersection.

Homeowners in the area say cars fly down this avenue. “It’s a huge worry lifted off my shoulders. If you see the traffic right now, cars are speeding and they don’t respect our area. I have my daughters who get picked up and dropped off my a school bus off this road. So you can imagine a mother having to worry about this dangerous intersection,” said Erika Gutierrez.

Yuma County Communications Director Kevin Tunell said ADOT warranted a traffic study indicating that a traffic light needed to be installed.

The new signal is expected to be operating by March 14.
