Comic store owner hopes for film diversity after Black Panther opening

A local comic store owner hopes for diversity in film after Black Panther premiered Thursday.

We spoke to a comic book owner who hopes that this movie will change film history.

Rueben Nejera, owner of Metahumans Comics in El Centro, has been reading comics his whole life.

“He’s the original, he’s the J ackie R obinson of comics. A lot of people didn’t really know who Black Panther was and now for it to hit like that, it’s pretty nuts. So hopefully this opens up for more ethnic film based characters and heroes like that because we need that. We need that in this country, show the diversity in things,” said Nejera .

Black Panther is the first mainstream black superhero film since Wesley Snipe’s Blade in 1998. With a star studded cast of mainly african American actors, writers and directors, the film looks to be the highest grossing marvel solo film of all time.

Nejera isn’t the only one who believes this film could change how we see future superhero movies.

This is by far the biggest risk that Marvel Studios has taken along with their other lesser known superheroes like Ant-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Black Panther can be opening a door for more superheroes of color on the big and small screens, who represent its multi-cultured readers and fans.
