Mother of Somerton shooting victim speaks out

The mother of a woman killed last week addressed the court and her daughter’s alleged killer when he made his second appearance on Monday in San Luis, Ariz.

Oscar Quintero, 25, is accused of shooting and killing 24-year-old Clarissa Medina and attempting to murder 22-year-old Hugo Ponce Verdugo.

On January 3 police received reports of several gunshots fired in the area of Main Street and Bingham Avenue where they found two gunshot victims in a parking lot.

Police arrested Quintero that same night and charged him with first-degree murder for domestic violence, attempted first-degree murder, and three counts of aggravated assault.

At Quintero’s court appearance Monday, Judge Juan M. Guerrero allowed Martha Medina, one of the victim’s mothers, to speak.

Quintero leaned forward with his head tucked under his chest sobbing while Medina’s mother addressed the court. She said he left two children without their mother.

“I ask that he remain detained until all of the court processes are done and final because I have my granddaughters. I fear for my granddaughters that he might take them with him and they are also have been hurt and damaged because they don’t have their mother. I ask your honor that the maximum punishment is imposed on him, the highest bond and that there is no contact with them.”

At this time there is no bond set for Quintero. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 12th.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for Medina and Verdugo.
