Family struck by car, claims the life of mother and five-year-old boy

UPDATE (4:21 P.M.)

The driver of the silver 2014 Chevrolet Silverado that was involved in the fatal collision on County 18th Street and Somerton Avenue on Thursday has been revealed.

According to Yuma County Sheriff’s Office, 27-year-old Nathan Morales of Yuma failed to stop at the intersection of County 18th Street and Somerton Avenue and collided with a gold 2007 Toyota Sequoia that was traveling northbound on Somerton Avenue.

41-year-old Somerton resident Doraly Correa was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center where she succumbed to her injuries. The 5-year-old boy was transported to the Yuma Regional Medical Center and later flown to a Phoenix-area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Two female young passengers were transported to the Yuma Regional Medical Center and flown out to a Phoenix-area hospital where they remain in critical condition.

The driver of the Silverado, Morales, was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center along with the passenger Tyrone Henry Holley, 31, both with non-life threatening injuries.

A criminal investigation is currently underway and it is still unknown if alcohol was a factor.

UPDATE (2:42 P.M.)

A mother of four and her five-year-old son lost their lives following a two-vehicle collision off County 18th Street and Somerton Avenue Thursday at 6:52 p.m.

According to a GoFundMe page, Doraly Correa lost her life due to the impact of the collision. Correa’s five-year-old son was transported to a Phoenix hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The two daughters of Correa who were also involved in the crash remain in stable but serious conditions in a Phoenix hospital.

EARLIER STORY

Yuma County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal crash that happened Thursday at 6:52 p.m. According to Somerton Cocopah Fire Department, a silver pickup truck and a tan SUV were found on fire off County 18th Street and Somerton Avenue.

Six victims were found lying on the side of the road and a good Samaritan was found performing CPR on a young male child at the time of arrival.

Witnesses told officials the silver truck was speeding and failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the SUV pushing both vehicles 100 feet past the intersection.

After the crash, nearby field workers and an off-duty Department of Corrections officer immediately went to the vehicle and began to pull out the occupants as the vehicles started to smoke.

The occupants of the SUV was an adult female driver and two young girls and a young boy. The young boy was taken out of the vehicle through the rear cargo door. Upon finding the boy he did not have a pulse and that’s when the off-duty corrections officer started performing CPR. The young boy was later flown to a Phoenix hospital where his condition has not been released.

The female driver suffered cardiac arrest soon after CPR was initiated. She was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center where life-saving efforts were continued but unsuccessful.

Several others involved were found with serious injuries.
