Mayor proclaims ‘Kim Johnson Day’ after 40 years of journalism in Yuma

After more than 40 years of dedicated journalism in the city of Yuma, Kim Johnson has retired

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Kim Johnson entered the world of journalism in 1981 covering local news fresh out of college in the city of Yuma. And while many like to jump from city to city in the world of journalism, Kim's world revolved around Yuma.

Johnson along with his wife and three children planted roots in Yuma, and while the city grew so did Johnson's experience in the field of television and radio news.

His voice narrated stories through the airwaves, whether it was current events in the area or upcoming elections, he always strived to keep the community informed and engaged.

Johnson has spent the last 15 years at the NPR affiliate in Yuma and La Paz County - KAWC.

After announcing his retirement on Monday, the Mayor along with the City of Yuma proclaimed May 3rd as 'Kim Johnson Day'; a day to recognize his story telling and dedication to the city of Yuma.

"The City of Yuma is grateful and appreciative of the sacrifice and dedication Kim has shown to reporting on stories that inform the lives of everyday 'Yumans'," read a part of the proclamation dedicated to Kim Johnson Day.

On behalf of KYMA, congrats and welcome to retirement.
