CBP seize 41 pounds of meth found inside car seats at Calexico Port

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a man attempting to smuggle methamphetamine inside his car seats at the Calexico West Port of Entry Monday.

A 50-year-old male was driving a 2008 Ford Focus through the port when a CBP officer referred him for a more in-depth examination.

After an intensive inspection by both the port’s imaging system and a canine team, officers noticed something within the car seats. Officers later discovered seven wrapped packages of methamphetamine concealed inside the seats.

The weight of the narcotics was 41 pounds with a street value of around $57,400.

“This is a great example of CBP enforcement layers working at our ports. CBP officers work tirelessly to protect our nation from dangerous drugs,” said Area Port Director David Salazar. “Their effort and ability to interdict contraband at the port of entry directly secure our border and prevent these dangerous drugs from entering our community.”

The driver, a Calexico resident, was arrested alleged narcotic smuggling attempt and turned over to Homeland Security Investigation agents for further processing.

He was later transported to the Imperial County Jail where he currently awaits arraignment.
