A big win for small local businesses as new Yuma store opens its doors

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - On Thursday night, The Concept Shop cut the ribbon and opened its doors as a brand new consignment shop on South Avenue B in Yuma.

The consignment shop is described as a retail store that accepts items from other local businesses and sells them for a percentage of the proceeds. In turn, bringing local businesses together as one and helping improve local shopping with the hopes to build each business.

The Concept Shop includes products ranging from clothes and jewelry, to different healthy gluten-free snacks from other local businesses.

The idea was inspired by a trip to Mexico some time ago. That's when Nidya De La Torre came across a very successful consignment shop ran by her friend, Lluvia Marquez. The two then decided to bring that idea to help and improve small businesses on the other side of the border in Yuma.

It also gives small businesses in Yuma a chance to work together and get back on their feet after the pandemic.

"I had this idea to put all the businesses together and become one. We are helping each other to grow," said De La Torre. "I know what it's like to go through the pandemic, having a small business of my own. I love helping other small businesses. I shop local and this is a big deal for me. We're bringing everyone together as one."

The ribbon cutting took place just outside the doors to the building that became available to De La Torre in March. A quick turnaround, but a special event with many people gathering to witness the grand opening.

By De La Torre's side were her business partner, Lluvia Marquez and entrepreneur and social media influencer, Linda Parra. De La Torre invited Parra to the event as their "madrina." Madrina meaning godmother in spanish.

The Chamber of Commerce also showed their support by making the opening statements and signing the ribbon.

"I'm so excited for Nidya and everyone else involved, especially for local businesses," said Parra. "It's great because it gives small businesses a chance to become a bigger business when they come together. Maybe on their own, they don't stand as strong but together in a community co-op like this, I think the chances are endless. The opportunities are endless."

De La Torre says that not only will this store help flourish local businesses, but it will allow more employment in Yuma to rise as she hopes to open more and more shops over the years.

"It will definitely open more jobs here in Yuma," said De La Torre. "The sky is the limit."
