Local partnership forms to improve internet access

The office of Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia partnered with Charter Communications to highlight an issue they have been working on for quite some time, digital literacy.

Thirty percent of California households don’t have access to a computer or high speed internet.

Local leaders say that Imperial County is an area that is extremely affected by the digital divide and they are looking for change.

Spectrum internet assist will help deliver a whole new world of digital access and opportunities to low-income families and senior citizens.

“Three years in a row this legislation was attempted to be done, but we just couldn’t get a consensus with all the stakeholders. It’s about civic participation too. It’s about civic participation too; many of your meetings are streamlined here in the local government agencies, if you want to file complaint, if you want to be able to look for a job. The list goes on and on, but I thought it was important to highlight that civic participation, you now need to be connected as well,” said Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia, District 56.

Assemblymember Garcia also attended a check presentation ceremony recognizing the Imperial Valley Food Bank and the Imperial Valley LGBT Resource Center with $1000 grants for their outstanding achievements.
