Local man visiting Mexico City tells of earthquake horror

Mexico City was hit with a devastating 7.1 earthquake on Tuesday afternoon. A local man lived through it and described it as a real nightmare.

Mexicali resident and actor Axel Vizantino said there was chaos everywhere.

“I was arriving in Mexico City airport. And the earthquake hit me there. People started running. The lights went out and everything was chaotic. I still didn’t know the magnitude of the disaster,” Vizantino said.

The earthquake has killed over 200 people in four areas in and around Mexico City. It hit hardest where Vizantino was.

“I saw people crying. I saw the disaster. Collapsed buildings. A lot of dust in the air,” Vizantino said.

With buildings still collapsing after the quake, Vizantino, like thousands of other Mexican people, got busy trying to rescue those trapped under the rubble.

“I decided to help, to help my brothers, to find the biggest number of people alive,” Vizantino said.

He says they need tools and supplies for the rescue efforts.

“We need water, medicines, tools, helmets. We need flashlights. We need batteries. We need first aid kits. There’s also places where we need machines to enter the buildings,” Vizantino said.

He said most of all they need hope.

“Prayers, so that this whole nightmare is less painful,” Vizantino said.

The earthquake hits 32 years after Mexico’s earthquake of 1985, which left thousands of dead or missing.
