Reacts from the Massive Earthquake in Mexico

The powerful earthquake that shook Mexico overnight has killed at least 61 people. It was the most powerful quake to hit the country in a century. Toppling hundreds of buildings and sending panicked people fleeing into the streets in the middle of the night. Rescues teams are currently underway trying to help those displaced.

This earthquake struck shortly before midnight on Thursday and was felt by tens of millions of people in various cities. President Enrique Peña Nieto flew to the region this afternoon to assess the damage and met with officials. Its consider the most powerful earthquake to hit the country in over a century. At last count it has killed 61 people all of them in the southern part of the country, closer to the quake’s epicenter off the pacific coast. Claudio Ochoa, a news reporter for Televisa in Mexico shares with us how people are coping and reacting to this natural disaster in his home country.

“Last night around 11:51 at night, everything started to move in Mexico City. The people were very scared in Oaxaca, Chiapas and Tabasco. Those are the places that suffered the power of this earthquake. The most powerful earthquake in the history of Mexico, so now in Mexico we are asking to the people around the world for some help,” said Ochoa.

More than 5,000 homes were completely destroyed in Mexico City and several leaders in Latin America and elsewhere offered assistance to the country, including the presidents of Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela and Spain. More than five-thousand homes were completely destroyed in Mexico city alone and since the 8.1 magnitude quake struck, there have been more than 300 aftershocks felt.
