Trial set for Brawley woman accused of child molestation

Diane Deveaux, the Brawley woman accused of 15 counts of child molestation, appeared in court Thursday morning.

Deveaux was arrested in February of 2017 after 19 videos were provided by Sherriff’s in the state of Florida, to authorities in Imperial County.

Deveaux appeared with different representation this time at Imperial County Superior Court, in El Centro.

According to previous testimony, she claims that she would perform the accused sexual acts on the children to please her boyfriend because she was afraid that he might lose interest in her.

The testimonies also included chilling and disturbing details of Deveaux performing sexual acts on the children while her boyfriend watched via webcam.

Her attorney had a strong opposition to filming in the courtroom but the judge continued to allow the coverage.

“I’m objecting to their presence with a camera in the courtroom, yes sir,” said Deveaux’s Attorney.

When Deveaux was originally arraigned, she had a right to a speedy trial within 60 days, but she waived those rights.

“The proposal that is being made by your attorney, apparently with the agreement of the district attorney’s office is to set your trial for January 16th of next year,” said Honorable Judge Christoper J. Plourd, Presiding Judge.

Deveaux then proceed to waive her right for a speedy trial, again.

“Do you waive your right to a speedy trial so that jurisdiction can set for trial on January 16th of 2018? So it would start on that day or within 10 days thereafter,” added Plourd.

“Yes,” said Deveaux.

If Deveaux is convicted on all the accused charges, she faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.

News 11 will continue to follow this case; Deveauxs jury trial is set to proceed January 16, 2018.
