Protect your garage from thieves this summer

Officers, on the graveyard shift, have noticed a high number of garage doors partially or fully opened leaving many residents vulnerable to burglars.

Summertime in the Desert Southwest will heat your garage up to temperatures hotter than anyone can bear. Residents in the area will partly open their garage doors to allow air to circulate to cool this oversized oven.

However, Sgt. Lori Franklin from the Yuma Police Department says “even a partially open garage door is easy to open if you don’t put some sort of block in place”, making it easier for burglars to make their way in.

Sgt. Franklin added “it doesn’t take much for criminals to get inside.”

The department says that if you do open or partially open your garage door during the day, they ask you to please consider these safety precautions:

— Put some sort of block on your door to keep someone from opening it up high enough to take your belongings.
— Ensure the door to your residence from the garage is locked.
— Close your garage door at night when it’s cooler.
