School traffic jams concerning student-parents

Parents around Yuma County are facing a traffic problem when it comes to picking up their kids from school. Melissa Walters is a mom picking up her kids from C.W. McGraw Elementary School. She says this traffic problem is an “everyday thing”. “It’s definitely scary, and students are just out here in all this traffic jammed pack together. It’s definitely not safe for the drivers and for the students.” Parents also say this has been an ongoing problem, feeling concerned about the speed of drivers once school is released. Elizabeth Dunlap says,”Whether you’re an adult, sixteen, eighty, I see everyone speeding nobody wants to stop and let the kids cross the street.” The problem is the “pickup line” to get your child from school. The line curves out and extends all the way down on Arizona Ave into the intersection of 24th street. At the same time the single lane turns into an illegal double lane for traffic to continue onto Arizona Ave-drivers who are not in line to pick up. However this isn’t the only school in Yuma County that’s having this problem.Yuma Elementary School District says they’re aware of this problem and hope to plan something with the city to fix it,but a mom like Elizabeth, thinks more parents like her should get involved with the issue. “Maybe if more parents were more aware, I’ve also talked to the school but they don’t have the help from other parents, maybe the police, I don’t know if they even have man power for that but it’s a suggestion.”
