Robbery suspect arrested at park in front of police station

Calexico Police Detective Armando Orozco had been looking for a suspect for almost three weeks. When he looked out his office window on Wednesday morning and saw the suspect sitting at Rockwood Park right in front of him he almost couldn’t believe his eyes.

“He was sitting at the kiosk across the street,” Orozco said.

Twenty-year-old Erick Camarillo of Calexico is accused of a recent store robbery and wanted on two separate arrest warrants. Police said he’s a fast runner.

“Earlier last week they attempted to apprehend Mr. Camarillo. He led them into a small foot pursuit where they weren’t able to apprehend him,” Orozco said.

Orozco said an anonymous tip came in.

“Myself, while using some binoculars, used them to look across the street and identify Mr. Camarillo, and where he was, what he was wearing what part of the park he was at, and just relay that to the officers that were arriving to the area,” Orozco said.

Four officers surrounded Camarillo.

“Officers setup with binoculars from investigation and kept an eye on him while patrol officers arrived to the area, came in from four different corners to avoid a foot pursuit. All avenues of escape were covered this time,” Orozco said.

Camarillo was arrested this time and is charged with robbery plus the other two warrants he has.

Orozco said he’s still surprised that Camarillo would choose to be at that place.

“Yeah. It’s a little bit funny he’d be across the street from the police department. Sometimes they do things that just don’t make sense,” Orozco said.

Chief Gomez said he’s not surprised.

“It doesn’t surprise me at all. We don’t arrest brain surgeons,” Gomez said.

Gomez said to commit crime makes no sense at all, either.
