Arizona couple plead innocent in shooting death of son

A Phoenix couple has pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges in the March 20 shooting death of their 9-year-old son.

Wendy and Kansas Lavarnia entered their not-guilty pleas Thursday in Maricopa County Superior Court to charges of first-degree felony murder, child abuse and hindering prosecution in the death of their son Landen.

Police have said Wendy Lavarnia told investigators that her 2-year-old son picked up a gun she had left on a bed and shot his brother.

Investigators became suspicious when they found inconsistencies in the mother’s account and when Kansas Lavarnia showed up at the home with a gunshot wound to his upper arm.

Authorities have declined to say who they believe shot the boy and his father.
