The “Living Library” brings stories to life

Checking out a book gets a little personal in the “Living Library”.

“Even though we’re all very different, we’re all the same.”

Librarian Elia Juarez,is bringing a new program at Yuma Heritage Library that will bring the community together in a different way.

“We are trying to recruit 15 to 20 people with an interesting diverse story or background to be living books.”

A tell-all experience where you aren’t judged by your cover.

“It could make you a unique person. If you’re a vegan, a veteran, a hiker, or a biker, anything that makes you an individual. Even if it’s brought a positive in your life….or negative in your life.”

The nation wide trend is used in communities to really get to know one another face to face.

“I know there’s a couple in Phoenix who have done this in the past. I know San Diego has done it in the past, but this is the first time we’ve tried bringing this to Yuma. It’s really for everyone, even if you’re a “shy” person, you’re only going to talk to two people at a time during “check out” time. You’re not going to be giving a speech in front of a lot of people.”

It’s a chance to tell your story and to hear those untold.

Juarez says, “Regardless of their background, religion, or political preference. If you have something about you that is a little different,something kind of cool, something special… you’re who we’re looking for.”
